National Treasury Employees Union and Senator Disagree Over Private Tax Collection
Sharon Edmondson, Washington Legislative Team Member | July 24, 2015
In a letter dated July 21, National Treasury Employees Union President Colleen Kelley asked senators to reject a provision in the Highway Trust Fund bill requiring the Treasury Department to hire private debt collectors as one way to help cover the cost of providing additional money for the highway bill.
Sen. Grassley (R-IA) criticized the NTEU for opposing the use of private agencies to collect taxes. Senator Grassley noted that this year the IRS had one of the worst filing seasons for customer service on record and the use of private contractors could do the extra work that the IRS cannot.
