Senator Warren Rails Against Robocall Provision in the Budget
Sharon Edmondson, Washington Legislative Team Member | October 28, 2015
More information on the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2015, released Tuesday.
As a follow-up to a previous update regarding the budget, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) railed against a provision in Tuesday's budget deal that would make it easier for loan servicers to robocall borrowers' cell phones - but conceded that the provision is too small to warrant picking a fight over the much larger budget agreement.
Warren said the provision "takes people who are in a tough spot and just squeezes them a little bit harder." She expressed several concerns with the provision and said that, in her experience, one reason people file for bankruptcy is "just to stop the phone calls."
The Education Department and the loan servicing industry support the change, saying it will make debt collection easier.
