Hearings on Puerto Rico Financial Matters Next Week
Sharon Edmondson, Washington Legislative Team Member | February 19, 2016
The House Financial Services Committee will now take its turn at addressing Puerto Rico's fiscal crisis.
The House panel's Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee has scheduled a hearing on Puerto Rico for Feb. 25. Rep. Sean Duffy (R-WI), who chairs that subcommittee, previously introduced legislation (HR 4199) to address the island's fiscal turmoil. Duffy's hearing will take place the same day as a House Natural Resources Committee hearing on the topic. The hearing marks a shift for the committee; House Financial Services Chairman Jeb Hensarling (R-TX) expressed little interest in committee action on Puerto Rico in December.
Also, Senator Hatch (R-UT) expressed skepticism about Puerto Rico’s release of unaudited financial data from fiscal year 2014 and Hatch said he will wait until after the hearings next week to take further action on the financial crisis for Puerto Rico.
