Lawrence P. King Award Recipient

Douglas G. Baird

Douglas G. Baird is recognized globally for his profound impact on the fields of bankruptcy, contract law, and commercial transactions. Since joining the University of Chicago Law School faculty in 1980, Professor Baird has been a driving force behind the “Chicago School” of law and economics, fundamentally reshaping how legal scholars and practitioners understand the machinery of corporate reorganizations and the deep structure of commercial life.

Professor Baird’s career is marked by a deep commitment to institutional excellence and leadership. He served as Dean of the University of Chicago Law School from 1994 to 1999, a period of significant growth and academic distinction for the institution. His influence on national policy is equally substantial; he currently serves as the Chair of the National Bankruptcy Conference, an elite non-partisan organization of scholars and practitioners that advises Congress on bankruptcy legislation.

His peers have repeatedly elevated him to the highest positions in the field. He is a former President of the American Law and Economics Association and has served as a Director and Scholar in Residence for the American College of Bankruptcy. In 1996, his contributions to the intellectual life of the nation were formally recognized with his election as a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Beyond the law school, he has been a tireless contributor to the University of Chicago at large, chairing the Arts Planning Council, the Library Board, and the Standing Committee on Academic Fraud.

Professor Baird has authored several of the most influential volumes in legal education, including:

  • The Unwritten Law of Corporate Reorganizations: A definitive look at the history, norms, and evolution of Chapter 11.
  • Elements of Bankruptcy: Now in its 7th edition, this remains the gold standard text for students and practitioners alike.
  • Reconstructing Contracts: A major work from Harvard University Press that refines our understanding of contractual obligations in a modern economy.
  • Game Theory and the Law: A seminal text that revolutionized how legal strategy is taught in the modern era.

Beyond his technical expertise, Professor Baird is a celebrated interdisciplinary scholar. His work frequently bridges the gap between law and the humanities, exploring how legal concepts of debt, commerce, and gender are reflected in the works of Anthony Trollope, James Fenimore Cooper, and Edward Bellamy.

Professor Baird’s path to preeminence began at Yale College, where he earned a B.A. in English (summa cum laude), followed by a J.D. from Stanford Law School. At Stanford, he served as the Managing Editor of the Stanford Law Review and was inducted into the Order of the Coif. Before entering academia, he honed his expertise through prestigious clerkships for two legendary jurists on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit: the Honorable Shirley M. Hufstedler and the Honorable Dorothy W. Nelson.
Throughout his career, he has been a sought-after voice at the world’s leading institutions, serving as a visiting professor at Harvard, Yale, and Stanford, and receiving an honorary Doctor of Laws from the University of Rochester. His work does more than explain the law; it uncovers the underlying economic and social logic that keeps the commercial world moving, making him one of the most respected voices in the history of American legal education.
