As this year’s chair of the Southern Region of the Commercial Law League of America, I would like to invite you to join us for the Southern Region Conference being held in the Ybor City historic district in Tampa, FL. The conference will take place on February 9 and 10 at the beautiful Hotel Haya, a four-star hotel which has much history and local color.

One of the highlights of this meeting will be the Ybor Night Parade sponsored by the Krewe of Knights of Sant’ Yago. A suite overlooking the parade has been reserved for members to enjoy an after-dinner drink, dessert, views of the parade and networking.

It is one of the highlights of Tampa’s annual Gasparilla celebration.

Ken Turkel, the prominent Tampa Florida Attorney who represented both Hulk Hogan and Sarah Palin will speak about both cases and the aspect of each case in reference to modern defamation law This seminar will also provide insight into the difficulties in handling highly publicized cases. The program will also address the efforts by Hulk Hogan to collect on the 40-million-dollar judgment entered in his favor. This will be an interesting and informative session presented by one of the leading figures in modern public figure defamation laws that you won’t want to miss.

This session will cover the most recent legal issues facing the premium cigar industry in the United States. Tampa and Ybor City in particular has a rich history of cigar making. The JC Newman Cigar company, established in 1895, has its headquarters in Tampa. JC Newman manufactures Cuesta-Rey and Diamond Crown Cigars among others. The presentation will include a discussion about recent attempts by the FDA to regulate the Premium Cigar industry and a recent Court victory against the FDA relating to the definition of Premium Cigars and the FDA’s attempt to regulate the industry.

Following dinner, stay and watch the parade from the private balcony of the Presidential Suite. 

The Krewe of the Knights of Sant’ Yago have hosted the Sant’ Yago Illuminated Knight Parade every year since 1974. The parade is a celebration of Tampa’s long Latin heritage and civic pride, brightening the streets of Ybor City’s 7th Avenue for a special night of floats, costumes, beads, and merriment.
